VR game Gorilla Tag reached $26 million in sales on Quest App Lab
In Brief
Gorilla Tag, free VR multiplayer game, made $26 million in revenue from in-app purchases on Quest App Lab.
The game also reached a peak of 2.3 million monthly active users, with 760,000 players on December 25.
The free VR game Gorilla Tag has only recently come out on the Meta Quest 2 headset through the Quest store but has instantly gained popularity. As of now, it has generated $26 million in revenue from in-app purchases on App Lab and reached a peak of 2.3 million monthly active users, with 760,000 players on Christmas Day.
Gorilla Tag was previously available on Quest’s App Lab, an app distribution platform for developers to reach consumers directly. The game launched on Steam Early Access and Sidequest in February 2021 and on the App Lab in March.
Gorilla Tag is a multiplayer game in which players control their movement solely through hand motions instead of body movement or joystick use. Players take on the form of cartoonish gorillas. It currently offers four game modes, three of which involve tag or similar gameplay, and one is a social mode.
The game’s developer, Another Axiom, told GamesBeat that the game’s success was driven mainly by word-of-mouth promotion, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok. With over 52,000 ratings on the Quest store, Gorilla Tag is currently the most popular game.
“Contrary to a lot of public discourse, VR is in a really good place right now and things are getting better. As Kerestell often points out, the hardware is already amazing at what it can do. That Gorilla Tag can be a success means VR is successful. A message we want to share for the VR industry is that it’s possible for developers to have a meaningful hit in VR and the audience wants content,”
Axiom said.
Gorilla Tag is available for free on the Meta Quest store and Steam and offers in-app purchases.
One of the most-awaited VR games, Bonelab, launched in September for Steam and Meta Quest 2. The sequel to the popular game Boneworks made $1 million in revenue less than an hour after its release, which made it the fastest-selling app on Quest.
As technology continues to improve and more people are exposed to it, VR games will likely become more popular. Vantage Market Research recently reported that the VR gaming market is predicted to surpass $37 billion by 2028.
