Hippocratic AI Unveils Safety-Focused Language Model with $50M Funding

Hippocratic AI, a pioneering startup in healthcare artificial intelligence, has emerged from stealth mode with a groundbreaking announcement: Developing the industry’s first safety-centric Large Language Model (LLM) tailored exclusively for the healthcare sector. The remarkable $50 million seed funding round, co-led by renowned venture capital firms General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz, made this endeavor possible.

Hippocratic AI aims to revolutionize healthcare by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence. Its cutting-edge technology, a text-generating model meticulously fine-tuned for healthcare applications, has garnered significant attention from investors and experts alike. The seed funding will fuel the startup’s endeavors, allowing it to recruit top-tier talent and provide comprehensive training for its expansive language models.

The company has focused on three key areas to construct a safer large language model: certification, reinforcement learning from healthcare professionals, and cultivating a bedside manner.

Hippocratic, which emerged from General Catalyst, was established by a team of healthcare experts, including physicians, hospital administrators, Medicare professionals, and AI researchers from esteemed institutions such as Johns Hopkins, UPenn, Stanford, Washington University in St. Louis, Google, and Nvidia.

According to a blog post by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), healthcare organizations face the dual challenge of engaging patients and members effectively amid clinician burnout and high staff turnover rates. Addressing these complex issues necessitates more than traditional approaches to training or increasing the human workforce. With its potential for tangible and measurable impact, generative AI holds tremendous promise in healthcare.

Recognizing the potential, the venture capital firm has expressed its excitement in supporting Hippocratic AI as they harness the power of generative AI to tackle these challenges head-on, thus bridging the gap in healthcare personnel shortage and maximizing the leverage of existing healthcare professionals.

“Hospitals are actively looking for solutions that can help them, and they don’t have enough nurses. Our focus is to build the safest language model for healthcare,”

said Hippocratic co-founder and CEO Munjal Shah.
