Gaming virtual world The Sandbox announced a partnership with Lionsgate. The companies will develop Metaverse experiences based on Lionsgate’s greatest movies.
Lions Gate Entertainment, popularly known as simply Lionsgate, is an American-Canadian entertainment company specializing in television and film production. Besides Lionsgate Film, the brand also includes a video game division Lionsgate Interactive Ventures and Games and Lionsgate Entertainment World.
The company will become the first TV and film studio to enter The Sandbox. The two plan to create virtual experiences based on famous movie scenes. The parties describe the project as a “part virtual real estate, part amusement park.” Lionsgate will have its special LAND with film-themed experiences for users to interact.
The partnership will start with the development of Neil Marshall’s “Hellboy” location called “Action City.” Then fans can also expect virtual places from “Rambo” and “The Expendables” scenes.
“Adding to this mix, a partner with the unparalleled global entertainment impact of Lionsgate—a company with 129 Academy Award nominations and a rich catalog of popular action and horror films—significantly enriches our open metaverse,” said the COO and co-founder of The Sandbox, Sebastien Borget.
This is not the first time The Sandbox partnered with a movie company. In April, it collaborated with Planet Hollywood to create the Meta Hollywood joint venture. Other gaming Metaverses also seem interested in developing cinema-oriented partnerships. For instance, in May this year, Decentraland issued an NFT collection to produce “The Infinite Machine” film.
