In Brief
OpenAI has introduced an official ChatGPT app for iOS devices, providing a secure and reliable mobile experience for users.

OpenAI has unveiled an iOS application for ChatGPT, marking its official entry into the mobile landscape. While various third-party apps claiming to offer ChatGPT have flooded the market, this legitimate and secure version ensures a reliable on-the-go experience for iPhone and iPad users. The app is free, without ads, synchronized with web chat history, and incorporates voice input, leveraging OpenAI’s open-source speech recognition model, Whisper. Initially launched in the US, the company plans to extend availability to other countries in the near future.
The new ChatGPT app offers the following features:
- Instant answers
- Tailored advice
- Creative inspiration
- Professional input
- Personalized learning
Users need to log in to their OpenAI account to use the mobile app. ChatGPT Plus, which includes the more advanced language model GPT-4, also costs $19.99 on the app. However, the company’s newly introduced plugins, such as real-time web connectivity, aren’t yet available. While OpenAI has announced the forthcoming launch of an Android version of the app, the precise date of its release has not been disclosed at this time.
OpenAI had not previously indicated any plans for a mobile app, but the decision aligns well with the overwhelming popularity of ChatGPT. Since its launch in November, the AI chatbot has experienced an explosive surge in usage. Estimates indicate that in January, ChatGPT garnered a record user base of around 100 million.
Until now, the most viable option for using OpenAI’s language models on mobile devices has been through the Microsoft Bing app, which grants access to their chatbot fueled by the GPT-4.
