A type of bond issued by a government to fund public spending is known as a government bond or sovereign bond. In most cases, it entails an obligation to return the face value on the maturity date and to make recurring interest payments, or coupon payments.

Sovereign debt crises are occasionally used to describe governments that are on the verge of default.
