U.S. Homeland Security Forms Task Force to Address Potential Risks in AI

In Brief

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is creating a task force to explore the use of artificial intelligence in protecting critical infrastructure and screening cargo for risks.

The task force will investigate both the benefits and potential harms of AI and look for ways to regulate its use.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is establishing a group of experts and professionals known as a task force to study and research the implementation of artificial intelligence to protect critical infrastructure from potential threats and to examine cargo for potential dangers. The goal is to identify effective ways to incorporate AI technology into these areas to improve security and safeguard against risks.

The department has announced two initiatives to defend essential services from threats, including cyber-attacks and physical attacks.

As reported by Reuters, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said AI would “drastically alter the threat landscape.”

“Our department will lead in the responsible use of AI to secure the homeland and in defending against the malicious use of this transformational technology,”

he added.

Mayorkas stated that the AI Task Force would investigate the potential use of AI technology in improving tasks, such as cargo screening, to prevent the entry of illegal items like fentanyl or slave-made products.

He believes the fast-paced technological advancements have created a crucial moment that demands immediate action. However, Mayorkas emphasized the importance of using AI to enhance critical infrastructure security, such as electric grids and water supply systems.

Any regulatory efforts to manage AI must strike a balance where the government can implement measures to safeguard against threats while allowing room for innovation. Mayorkas also pointed out that AI is still in its early stages, and it’s currently difficult to determine whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

This month, the Biden administration announced that it was soliciting feedback from the public on methods to ensure accountability for AI systems. President Joe Biden had previously informed his science and technology advisors that while AI could aid in addressing issues such as disease and climate change, there are also many risks.
