OpenAI Sets Foot in Europe, Establishes Office in Dublin

OpenAI has chosen Dublin, Ireland, as the latest location for its global expansion efforts. While headquartered in San Francisco and with a recently announced office in London, OpenAI aims to foster controlled growth in its new Dublin office.

Contrary to expectations, the new office will not serve as the company’s European headquarters and no executive leadership will oversee it initially. OpenAI’s chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, emphasized the company’s commitment to cultivating a robust office culture before rapid scaling.

The Dublin office currently offers nine job openings spanning various teams, with plans to introduce more roles soon. The current roles include Software Engineer, Program Manager, Media Relations, Ireland Policy and Partnerships Lead, International Payroll Specialist, Customer Success Manager, Associate General Counsel, Account Director, and Account Associate.

Dublin has become a hotspot for U.S. tech giants, including Meta and Google, thanks to its access to a skilled talent pool and its advantageous position for engaging with Europe from regulatory and business development perspectives. According to Reuters, tax considerations did not factor into OpenAI’s decision, as the company has yet to achieve profitability.

In April, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced plans to establish a dedicated office in Japan. Altman met Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, where he expressed a commitment to collaborate with Japanese talent and adapt AI models to cater to the specific needs of the Japanese population. The announcement also coincided with OpenAI’s pledge to work closely with the government to ensure robust user privacy and safety in the context of ChatGPT, the company’s AI chatbot.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has witnessed remarkable growth, becoming one of the fastest-growing apps in history, trailing only Meta’s Threads app. However, this rapid growth has also brought OpenAI into conflict with European regulators due to concerns surrounding mass data collection.
