Apple Vision Pro Unveiled Exciting Opportunities for Developers

In Brief

Apple introduces new software tools and technologies for developers to create immersive app experiences using Apple Vision Pro, the first mixed-reality headset powered by visionOS.

The visionOS SDK is now available, allowing developers to design apps in various categories, such as productivity, design, and gaming, taking full advantage of Vision Pro’s capabilities.

Further exploration of undisclosed features and partnerships, including fitness-related aspects, is anticipated for Apple’s headset.

Apple unveiled new software tools and technologies for developers to create app experiences using Apple Vision Pro. The company’s first mixed-reality headset, powered by visionOS – the world’s first spatial operating system – enables users to seamlessly interact with digital content in their physical space through eyes, hands, and voice.

Apple Vision Pro Unveiled Exciting Opportunities for Developers

With the visionOS SDK now available, developers can design apps across various categories, including productivity, design, and gaming. Apple is offering early access to the visionOS SDK, well before the Vision Pro’s official release in the U.S. at the beginning of 2024.

Starting next month, developers will have the opportunity to try out their apps on Apple Vision Pro devices and get feedback from Apple experts at developer labs in Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Development teams can also apply for developer kits to streamline building, iterating, and testing on Apple Vision Pro. Also, next month, developers using Unity’s robust authoring tools can easily port their 3D apps and games to Apple Vision Pro, fully leveraging its powerful capabilities.

“By taking advantage of the space around the user, spatial computing unlocks new opportunities for our developers, and enables them to imagine new ways to help their users connect, be productive, and enjoy new types of entertainment. We can’t wait to see what our developer community dreams up,”

said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations.

Jan Herzhoff, president of Elsevier Health’s Complete HeartX, believes that Apple Vision Pro, coupled with Complete HeartX, will revolutionize medical education by providing hyper-realistic 3D models and animations. This will help medical students understand complex medical issues like ventricular fibrillation and apply their knowledge effectively to patients.

Apple’s Vision Pro Holds Undisclosed Features, Including Fitness Use-Cases

Apple demonstrated a meditation experience for the press during the Vision Pro presentation. The Information reports that more wellness and fitness apps were planned for the device but not shown due to concerns about the external battery and delicate glass front. Apple had also considered acquiring the VR fitness app Supernatural, but Meta acquired it first.

Apple chose not to emphasize VR and AR gaming during the presentation, as they showcased only the gameplay of flat iOS games using a PS5 gamepad. According to the report, one reason for this omission could be the limited precision of hand tracking, which may not be ideal for the precise interactions needed in gaming.
