Apple to Launch a Cheaper Version of Vision Pro Headset in 2025

In Brief

Apple is developing a more affordable version of Vision Pro to broaden its reach in spatial computing.

The cheaper model, possibly called Apple Vision or Apple Vision One, is expected to be released by the end of 2025.

Apple has taken the tech world by storm with its newly announced $3,500 Vision Pro headset. But Apple’s ambition in spatial computing doesn’t end there. To make VR technology accessible to a broader audience, the company is already developing a more affordable version of the Vision Pro, Bloomberg reports.

“The name Vision Pro even implies there’s a non-Pro version in the works, which one has to assume will be called the Apple Vision or Apple Vision One,”

Apple expert Mark Gurman wrote for Bloomberg.

Apple plans to release a cheaper model of the Vision Pro headset by the end of 2025. The company is working on a second-generation Vision Pro with a faster processor, following a similar strategy to their iPhone and iPhone Pro models.

The most expensive parts of the Vision Pro are its dual Apple silicon chips, its array of cameras and sensors, and its pair of 4K micro-OLED VR screens. A cheaper version could have lower-quality displays, a single chip from an older iPhone or Mac model, and fewer cameras for reduced performance.

Apple could also save costs by simplifying the headband design, using AirPods instead of speakers in the strap for spatial audio, having a manual rather than automatic adjustment for the distance between eye pupils, and removing features like the 3D camera. According to Gurman, these changes, along with a more efficient production process, a cheaper frame, and larger scale production, could lower the price by several hundred dollars.

Gurman believes that certain aspects of the Apple Vision headset, such as the EyeSight external screen and the eye- and hand-tracking system, are essential and unlikely to be compromised in a cheaper model. These features are considered as important to Apple Vision as the touchscreen is to an iPhone.

Gurman revealed in January that Apple plans to release a mixed-reality headset at a more affordable price point. He also added that the tech giant abandoned its plans to create AR glasses.
