As CEO, Pelonomi Moiloa leads Lelapa AI, a company committed to promoting AI research and solutions created by Africans for Africans. Her eight years of experience in data science, particularly with machine learning applications in the banking industry, are enhanced by her studies in electrical and biomedical engineering. Co-directing The Ungovernable NPC, which is in charge of the Code Kamoso coding academy for female youths and a communal vegetable and medicinal garden, Moiloa also serves as a trustee and mentor for the Ruth First Memorial Trust scholarship program.

Lelapa AI has created a language processing tool for underrepresented African languages to assist businesses in translating, transcribing, and analyzing text and audio for local consumers. Moiloa refers to Lelapa AI as a “socially grounded product and research lab.”

The project’s earnings will be put toward creating an open data platform that will track the repatriation of artifacts with African cultural value. Though concerns about “data colonialism,” or Big Tech’s exploitation of data from the Global South, are not exclusive to Africa, tech experts claim that the continent’s lax AI laws increase the danger. A 2022 UNESCO research cautioned that AI technology in Africa may “exacerbate existing social and economic inequalities” by discriminating against vulnerable groups, like refugees, for example, if appropriate policies protecting local users’ data and needs weren’t in place.
