Meredith Whittaker leads the Signal Foundation as president and is a member of the board of directors. She co-founded the AI Now Institute and served as its faculty director before leaving her position as the Minderoo Research Professor at New York University (NYU). She also worked for the Federal Trade Commission as Chair Lina Khan’s senior AI adviser. Whittaker co-founded the M-Lab and Google’s Open Research group during her 13 years of employment there. She participated in the Google Walkouts as a core organizer in 2018 and left the business in July 2019.

On October 31, Shield AI reported that company has secured $200 million in a Series F fundraising round that was oversubscribed and co-led by Riot Ventures and the US Innovative Technology Fund (USIT). Following the round, the San Diego-based AI expert’s valuation increased to $2.7 billion.

The AI industry as a whole, which includes platforms, services, and hardware, is expected to reach $908.7 billion in 2030, up from $81.3 billion in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.2%, according to GlobalData projections. The intelligence firm also offers further statistics from corporate filings, showing that this year, AI has been cited 574 times, with robots coming in second with 241 references.
