Marc Raibert, Chairperson of Boston Dynamics

Raibert's research is devoted to the study of systems that move dynamically, including physical robots and animated creatures. Raibert's laboratory at MIT, the Leg Lab, is well known for its work on systems that move dynamically, including legged robots, simulated mechanisms, and animated figures. The Leg Lab created a series of laboratory robots including one-legged hoppers, biped runners, a quadruped, and two kangaroo-like robots. Taken collectively, these robots travel along simple paths, balance themselves actively, climb a simple stairway, run fast (13.1 mph), run with several gaits, and do rudimentary gymnastic maneuvers.

The Boston Dynamics AI Institute, a Hyundai Motor Group company, is led by Marc Raibert as its executive director. The institute’s mission is to solve the most significant issues in robotics and artificial intelligence in order to make significant advancements in robotics engineering and science. The inventor, CEO, and current Chairman of Boston Dynamics, a robotics startup best known for BigDog, Atlas, Spot, and Handle, is Raibert.

Raibert was an associate professor of computer science and robotics at Carnegie Mellon University and a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT before founding Boston Dynamics. He established the Leg Laboratory at CMU in 1980, which contributed to the development of the scientific foundation for extremely active robots. The first self-balancing hopping robots were created by Raibert, which was a huge advancement in robotics. Raibert graduated from Northeastern University with a BSEE in Electrical Engineering in 1973 and MIT with a PhD in 1977. His dissertation advisors were Whitman Richards and Berthold Horn, and it was titled “Motor control and learning by the state space model”. In recognition of his work on the biomechanically driven analysis, synthesis, control, and application of multi-legged robots, Raibert was chosen as a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2008.

To develop bipedal and quadrupedal robotics to a supernatural level is Raibert’s ambition. Google purchased Boston Dynamics in December of 2013. “Excited by Andy Rubin and Google’s ability to think very, very big… with the resources to make it happen,” Raibert said in regards to the purchase. Google started to sell Boston Dynamics in March of 2016. SoftBank purchased the business in June 2017. Hyundai Motor Group purchased Boston Dynamics in 2020.

2023

At the beginning of 2024, a development team from the Boston Dynamics AI Institute is scheduled to arrive in Greater Zurich. According to a news statement from the Institute, by doing this, the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company, which focuses on utilizing artificial intelligence’s benefits, hopes to encourage further expansion and draw in the greatest talent in Europe.

The AI Institute Launches Ethics Research Initiative for Robotics and AI, they have hired Dr. Kate Darling to lead its study of ethics and societal impact. In this role, Darling will lead a team of researchers to explore key societal questions related to the development of intelligent machines.

There are now issues with public perception, technological literacy, government legislation, and media coverage because to the rapid advancements in robots and AI. Data from science are required to inform discussions and direct technological advancement. Darling’s team will investigate both short- and long-term issues regarding the use and usage of robots, as well as its effects on infrastructure, the workplace, and other subjects. In addition to doing research and experiments to produce the data required by others to make well-informed ethical and policy judgments, the team will create a series of lectures and workshops at the nexus of robotics, ethics, law, and economics to provide a forum for wide-ranging discussion.
