Dr. Fei-Fei Li is the inaugural Sequoia Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute. She served as the Director of Stanford’s AI Lab from 2013 to 2018. And during her sabbatical from Stanford from January 2017 to September 2018, Dr. Li was Vice President at Google and served as Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud. Since then she has served as a Board member or advisor in various public or private companies.

Dr. Fei-Fei Li is the first Sequoia Professor in the Stanford University Computer Science Department and the co-director of the Human-Centered AI Institute at Stanford. From 2013 until 2018, she oversaw Stanford’s AI Lab as its director. Additionally, from January 2017 until September 2018, when she took a sabbatical from Stanford, she worked as Google’s Vice President and Chief Scientist for AI/ML at Google Cloud. Dr. Fei-Fei Li graduated with honors from Princeton University in 1999 with a B.A. in physics, and from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2005 with a PhD in electrical engineering. In 2009, she became an assistant professor at Stanford. She had previously taught at Princeton University from 2007 to 2009 and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2005 to 2006.

The areas of cognitively inspired AI, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and AI+healthcare—particularly ambient intelligent systems for healthcare delivery—are among Dr. Fei-Fei Li’s current research interests. She has also previously engaged in computational and cognitive neuroscience. In prestigious journals and conferences as Nature, PNAS, Journal of Neuroscience, CVPR, ICCV, NIPS, ECCV, ICRA, IROS, RSS, IJCV, IEEE-PAMI, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Digital Medicine, etc., Dr. Li has published over 200 scientific articles. ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, a vital large-scale dataset and benchmarking project that has aided in the most recent advancements in deep learning and artificial intelligence, were created by Dr. Li.

The “AI Perspectives from Asia” program has been announced by Stanford HAI and the Asia Foundation. The partnership will conduct research, provide instructional training, and hold conferences to assist Asia Pacific area governments and civil society in maximizing the benefits of AI while minimizing its drawbacks.

The issue of artificial intelligence (AI) has gained significant attention and discourse among policymakers worldwide. AI, both generative and otherwise, is affecting public service delivery, disrupting economies, altering citizen communication, changing the nature of labor, and much more.

The Asia Foundation and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) have launched a new program to support stakeholders in Asia and the Pacific with the insights they need to effectively navigate the societal effects of this technology. The goal of this initiative is to help governments and civil society understand and engage with AI in an effective manner. The new partnership will strengthen an international conversation on AI by using HAI’s capabilities in research and teaching as well as the Foundation’s program reach across more than 20 nations in the area. The first track of the program will be devoted to providing policymakers in Asian nations with forums for discussion and briefings on the latest developments in AI technology, as well as on how AI affects inclusion and society and possible frameworks for regulations and policy.
