The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) announced a new category: the “Best Metaverse Performance.”
The 2022 Metaverse award nominees are BLACKPINK, Ariana Grande, BTS, Twenty One Pilots, Charli XCX, and Justin Bieber.

This year’s nominees all performed in different Metaverses. Ariana Grande sang in Fornite, while Justin Bieber performed in the virtual entertainment platform Wave. Twenty One Pilots and Charli XCX chose Roblox as a concert venue, BTS danced and sang their hits on a Minecraft stage, and Blackpink has been doing its “The Virtual” concerts in PUBG Mobile.
“We saw the opportunity to highlight and honor some of the best, most impactful executions of this — and celebrate artists who have found creative ways to use these spaces — which led to the addition of ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ category this year,” said an MTV spokesperson.
With the rise of technology adoption, many music artists opt for Metaverse-based performances and audio-visuals. In 2022 alone, several A-list celebrities released Metaverse and NFT-themed music videos. Snoop Dogg created the first Metaverse video in collaboration with The Sandbox in April of this year. In June, he partnered with Eminem to release a video collaboration with The Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection.
However, the genre is not that recent — in 2020, Travis Scott made a performance in Fortnite. The virtual concert was followed by 12 million fans all over the world.
