Google Ads Scheme Exposes Cryptocurrency Users to Scam Vulnerability

Users have encountered fraudulent Google ads that redirect clicks to fraudulent cryptocurrency domains. Despite several reports to Google, the tech giant has yet to take decisive action.

How the Scam Works

Scammers purchase ads for well-known cryptocurrency websites on Google, featuring the correct URL of the legitimate site. However, when users click on the ad, they are rerouted through an ad network, such as Kochava, which then redirects them to a scam website.

The insidious part of this scheme is that the legitimate domain name appears on Google’s trusted interface, lulling users into a false sense of security.

The Role of Google and Ad Networks

The situation prompts queries about Google’s and the involved ad networks’ accountability. Google gains from each click on a phishing link ad, fostering debate on the company’s incentive to address the issue.

Despite numerous reports to Google and the ad network, the scam persists. Recommendations include installing ad blockers and employing dedicated browser extensions to guard against scam URLs.

Further complicating matters, not every click on the misleading ad directs users to a scam site, heightening the challenge of verifying the legitimacy of their clicks.

This additional layer of deceit complicates endeavors to efficiently report and eliminate the scam.

Steps for User Protection

As the scam endures, users must rely on installing ad blockers to eliminate all Google ads and exercising caution when encountering ads.

Moreover, dedicated Google extensions designed to fend off scam URLs are accessible.

With Google’s response being sluggish, the onus is on individual users to adopt preventive measures, amid lingering uncertainties about corporate accountability.
