Google Introduces New Generative AI Capabilities in Search

At its I/O event two weeks ago, Google teased new generative AI capabilities in Search. On May 25, the tech giant has announced that it is opening up access to Search Labs, a new program that lets people participate in experiments and test out the technology prior to its broader rollout.

Individuals can sign up for experiments using the Search Labs app, including the Search Generative Experience. To sign up for Search Labs, individuals must tap the Labs icon in the latest version of the Google app on iOS or Android, or on Chrome desktop. Once accepter to Search Labs, users will receive an email invite to the testing of the new generative AI features in Search.

According to Google, the new generative AI-powered Search experience will enable users to understand a topic faster and accomplish tasks more easily.

Google states that with this new update, it is now easier to get acquainted with new or complicated subjects. Let’s say you need help understanding the difference between ‘learning ukulele versus guitar’. Search will now provide an AI-powered overview to assist you with understanding what variables to consider when you enter a query like that.

Individuals can also locate quick answers for specific questions by searching for things like “How to get an old coffee stain out of a wool sweater?” or “How can I renew my passport quickly?” Users will receive a variety of options and get assistance from the web.

When searching for “Peel and stick wallpaper for kitchen,” users will receive answers that include a list of options including price, ratings and links to purchase. The new search experience has a Shopping integration as well.

“This experiment is our first step in adding generative AI to Search, and we’ll be making many updates and improvements over time. As we continue to reimagine how we can make it even more natural and intuitive to find what you’re looking for, we’re excited for you to test out these new capabilities and share feedback along the way,” writes Google in a blog post.
