VR Industry’s Moment: What to Expect in Meta Quest Gaming Showcase and Apple’s WWDC23?
In Brief
Meta Quest Gaming Showcase 2023 kicks off today, featuring new game announcements, enhancements to upcoming Quest games, and developer-focused discussions. Speculations of a possible reveal of Meta Quest 3, their latest VR headset.
Today kicks off the grand event for Meta: The Meta Quest Gaming Showcase 2023. The event will introduce new game announcements, enhancements to upcoming Quest games, and engaging discussions tailored to developers. The showcase could also potentially reveal Meta Quest 3, the company’s newest VR headset.
Meta has not revealed many details about what to expect during the event. However, Oculus Studio Executive Producer Ruth Bram will host the event. The main show will last 40 minutes, with a 15-minute pre-show and a post-show roundtable for more insight into upcoming Quest titles. We may see updates to big-name VR titles first revealed at Meta’s Gaming Showcase in 2022, such as GTA: San Andreas VR and Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord.
Next week also promises to be momentous for VR. At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple should unveil its long-awaited mixed-reality headset, which has been in development for several years.
Apple has invited select media outlets, including Road to VR and UploadVR, to its upcoming WWDC keynote. It is the first time XR media outlets have been invited to an Apple event.
How to Attend Meta Quest Event and WWDC?
The Meta Quest Gaming Showcase will be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube on June 1 at 10 am PT. Users who want to immerse themselves in the metaverse with a headset can watch the showcase via Meta Horizon Worlds.
WWDC 2023 will mostly be virtual, with a special in-person event on June 5 at Apple Park. Attendees can watch the keynote and State of the Union, meet with Apple teams, attend the Apple Design Awards, and enjoy evening activities. The event will also be live-streamed on YouTube and available on Apple’s Events website or the Apple Developer app on various devices. The keynote will take place at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET on June 5.
How Will the Events Shape the Future of VR?
Meta and Apple are two of the world’s largest tech companies, and their embracement of VR technology is a positive development for the industry. Meta has been in the industry for a while but constantly received criticisms for its newest headset, Quest Pro. Zuckerberg’s company now has the opportunity to address these issues with its highly anticipated release – Meta Quest 3. Meanwhile, Apple is making its first foray into the metaverse with a mixed-reality headset and could potentially shake up the industry.
Andrey Manolov, Director of Development Product Integration at the metaverse Sensorium Galaxy, shared his opinion on the events with Metaverse Post.
“Both the Meta Quest Showcase and WWDC23 have the potential to revolutionize the virtual reality industry, signifying remarkable milestones in its evolution. These events can be compared to the groundbreaking launches of Oculus Rift CV1 in 2016 and Oculus Quest in 2019,”
Manolov said.
The upcoming devices from Apple and Meta are poised to make a significant impact as popular mixed reality devices, Manolov added. Unlike conventional VR experiences that transport users to virtual environments, these devices will augment users’ existing surroundings with interactive 3D content.
“This shift from VR to MR represents a paradigmatic change, opening doors to innovative XR application formats. These new formats not only aim to deliver captivating 3D experiences but also take into account the context in which the application is used, acknowledging the user’s environment as a crucial element of the overall experience,”
Manolov shared.
Events like WWDC and the Meta Quest Showcase generate excitement by offering a glimpse into the future of VR technology. These events drive innovation and competition within the industry, leading to more exciting developments in the virtual reality space.
