UK Invests £100M in Taskforce to Advance AI Development and Adoption

The British government has announced a significant investment of £100 million ($124.5 million) in a taskforce focused on developing foundation models for artificial intelligence. The strategic investment in the country’s AI capabilities aims to ensure the UK remains globally competitive in this crucial technology.

The Foundation Model Taskforce will focus on developing safe and reliable foundation models for use across the economy. This announcement was made by the Prime Minister and Technology Secretary, who emphasized the importance of AI.

The taskforce will have a significant impact on fields like healthcare and education. In healthcare, AI could speed up diagnoses, drug discovery, and development. In education, it could free up teachers’ time to focus on delivering excellent teaching. The team will also work towards establishing the UK as a world leader in foundation models and their applications across the economy, as well as promoting AI safety as a global standard.

The UK government cited studies that have suggested the widespread adoption of AI systems could triple national productivity growth rates, highlighting the potential impact of this technology. Besides, AI adoption is predicted to raise global GDP by 7% over a decade, making it a vital opportunity to grow the UK economy.

According to Science, innovation, and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan, the government is investing in a taskforce to ensure the UK remains a leader in AI technology and prioritizes safety and reliability to build public trust. She said that “developed responsibly, cutting-edge AI can have a transformative impact in nearly every industry.”

“Harnessing the potential of AI provides enormous opportunities to grow our economy, create better-paid jobs, and build a better future through advances in healthcare and security,”

said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

To develop foundation models, the UK government is investing over £900 million in a powerful supercomputer and AI Research Resource. The taskforce will manage how these funds are used to improve the UK’s foundation model abilities.

Last month, the UK government launched a Science and Technology Framework to make the country a “superpower” in innovation and technology by 2030. This initiative aims to provide digital infrastructure, unlock the value of data for growth and societal benefits, and foster a more competitive and inclusive digital economy. The government set plans to invest over £370 million to support research and new technologies.
