Paul Christiano, Founder, Alignment Research Center

American artificial intelligence researcher Paul Christiano specializes on AI alignment, a branch of safety research that tries to nudge AI systems in the direction of human needs. Prior to founding and serving as the director of the nonprofit Alignment Research Center, which focuses on theoretical AI alignment and machine learning model assessments, he oversaw the OpenAI language model alignment team.

Christiano formed the Alignment Research Center to concentrate on this field after leaving OpenAI in 2021 to work on more theoretical and conceptual problems with AI alignment. The challenge of extracting latent knowledge from sophisticated machine learning models is one area of research. Additionally, ARC creates methods for determining and evaluating an AI model’s potential for hazard. Christiano stated to The Economist in April 2023 that ARC was thinking about creating an industry standard for AI safety.

Christiano was selected to the Frontier AI Taskforce advisory board by the UK government in September of 2023. He also serves as the Long-Term Benefit Trust’s first trustee for Anthropic.
