In 2017, Omar Sultan Al Olama was named the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, making history as the first minister in the world in this area. His responsibilities were extended to encompass applications for remote work and the digital economy in July 2020. He was also named the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs’ Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office in 2023.

Omar Sultan Al Olama is the holder of several more leadership roles. In addition to being Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain Council, he is Vice Chair of the World Government Summit, Chairman of the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, and Deputy Managing Director of the Dubai Future Foundation. He also serves as Vice Chairman of Dubai’s Higher Committee for Future Technology and Digital Economy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Digital School, Vice Chairman of the Higher Committee for Government Digital Transformation, and a member of the Advisory Board of MBZUAI. In addition, he is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Future of Digital Economy and Society Council, the UAE Genomics Council, and the Emirates Competitiveness Council.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Omar Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, to the High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. There are 38 members of the UN body, including government leaders, high-tech entrepreneurs, and professionals and experts in AI. According to Mr. Al Olama, the UAE’s leadership in the area is reflected in his membership in the body. According to him, the UAE has attained this point because of its leadership, readiness for upcoming difficulties, and advancement of AI-based solutions.

The organization brings together many viewpoints on how the rapidly advancing technology might be applied to the benefit of society. The purpose of the AI Advisory Body is to offer suggestions regarding global AI regulation, comprehending the hazards and difficulties associated with AI, and outlining AI’s contribution to the advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Group’s objectives.
