Charlie Brooker, Writer and Television Presenter

Author, producer, humorist, and television host Charlton Brooker is from England. He has written for comedic shows including Brass Eye, The 11 O’Clock Show, and Nathan Barley in addition to being the creator and co-showrunner of the science fiction drama anthology series Black Mirror.

Before joining PC Zone as a writer, Brooker began his career as a cartoonist, creating advertisements for the used video game shop CeX. He has hosted a variety of television programs, such as Screenwipe, Gameswipe, Newswipe, Weekly Wipe, and 10 O’Clock Live, most of which are humorous and sharp critiques of contemporary culture and the media. Dead Set, a 2008 horror drama series, was also written by him. He is one of the four creative directors of the production business Zeppotron and has published social critique pieces for The Guardian.

In June, Charlie Brooker made public that he had tested letting ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, compose an episode of his well-liked anthology series. He declared at the time that the outcome was “shit.” Brooker discussed the experiment in more detail on a recent panel at the SXSW event held at Sydney’s International Convention Centre (via The Guardian).

“Go give me an outline for a Black Mirror story,” Brooker replied in response to ChatGPT. You get a chilly, animal-terrifying feeling in the first few phrases, as if someone is fucking replacing you. I won’t even bother to see what it does. I’m going to leap out of this damn window. As ChatGPT worked on the episode, Brooker’s anxiety over being replaced lessened. According to Brooker, ChatGPT will never be as effective as a real scriptwriter because it lacks the messy nature of being human. He also discussed the negative feedback that “Black Mirror” received from viewers when it ran on Channel 4 for two seasons and a Christmas special before moving to Netflix for a further four seasons.
