Meta Quest integrates Android and heart monitoring for VR fitness rate
In Brief
Meta has launched heart rate monitoring features for its Quest and Quest 2 VR headsets.
Meta will also allow Android users to keep track of all their fitness stats via Health Connect.
Meta has rolled out two new health-related features for its Quest and Quest 2 VR headsets. Users can now enjoy physical activity through Quest’s VR fitness apps while keeping track of their heart rates.
Through an official release, Meta has also announced that Android users can keep track of all their fitness stats via Health Connect, Google’s health API (a software interface between two apps) that allows Android users to connect health and fitness data between multiple apps and merge the information in one place. Now, VR fitness enthusiasts can automatically track their health information with no manual input necessary
Heart rate monitoring was one of the most requested fitness features for Quest. When paired with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor, users can see their heart rate in real-time during their workout. This gives fitness enthusiasts real-time data on how VR workouts affect their heart rate, helping them to meet their goals and taking guess work out of the equasion.
“When a compatible heart rate monitor is paired with Meta Quest Move, the heart rate overlay will be displayed across any game or app in VR. A developer will not need to integrate,”
said Meta’s representative Travis Isaman.
Heart rate monitors compatible with Quest are the Garmin HRM-Dual and the Polar H10.
Meta also announced the Elite Strap would come at no additional cost when buying the Meta Quest 2. The Elite Strap is an ergonomic accessory that simplifies VR workouts by adding balance and support to the Quest 2 headset.
Zuckerberg is bullish on the VR fitness industry. Last month, Meta attempted to acquire the VR fitness app Within Inc. However, the FTC is trying to prevent Meta from doing so, accusing Zuckerberg of attempting to buy its dominance in the metaverse.
On Wednesday, metaverse platform Roblox announced possible plans to join Meta and expand its VR offerings. Roblox is planning to arrive on Meta Quest in late 2023.
