Apple Unveils Mixed-Reality Headset at Steve Jobs Theater. What to Expect?
In Brief
Apple recently showcased its upcoming mixed-reality headset, set to launch in June, at an annual gathering of the company’s top executives.
The company hopes to follow the success of the Apple Watch by gradually improving the device and finding its niche as a leader in mixed reality.
Apple has recently held a significant event at its Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. The gathering comprised roughly 100 of the company’s highest-ranking executives, known as the Top 100. The primary focus was to showcase one of Apple’s most important new products in years, including the mixed-reality headset, which will launch in June. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that in this annual event, the headset was demonstrated as “a polished, glitzy, and exciting project,” which is a significant improvement from the previous years’ discreet looks.
“The device will start at around $3,000, lack a clear killer app, require an external battery that will need to be replaced every couple of hours and use a design that some testers have deemed uncomfortable. It’s also likely to launch with limited media content,”
Bloomberg wrote.
According to Bloomberg, the headset had a slow start, with underwhelming apps, a clunky interface, a slow processor, and an unclear purpose. Over time, Apple made improvements to the device by enhancing the capabilities of third-party applications, streamlining the operating system, and incorporating a faster processor. Eventually, the product found its niche as a fitness tracker, health companion, and notification manager, which resonated with consumers.
The headset is expected to follow a similar trajectory to the Apple Watch. While the first version may have lower unit sales compared to existing Apple products, it’s still expected to establish Apple as the leader in mixed reality within a few months.
During its initial year on the market, Apple anticipates selling approximately one million units of its headset, possibly named Reality Pro or Reality One. This would result in revenue of roughly $3 billion. However, due to the device’s costly components, Apple is not expected to make a significant profit first and doesn’t plan to pursue its typical profit margins, Bloomberg wrote.
Last month, Apple’s design team warned CEO Tim Cook that the mixed-reality headset was not ready for a 2023 launch, which could have resulted in further delays. Despite the cautionary advice, Cook decided to move forward with the project.
