Animoca Brands acquires WePlay Media to bring MotoGP™ Championship Quest to Web3
Animoca Brands, the global leader in digital collectibles and blockchain gaming, has acquired WePlay Media, the developer of MotoGP™ Championship Quest.
MotoGP™ Championship Quest is a top-rated racing game on Google Play, with millions of downloads and five-star user reviews. It’s available for free on Google Play and the App Store and allows people to race against other players from around the world. Players can train their own avatars and upgrade their bikes to improve their performance in races with other competitors. Now, the game, along with its developer WePlay Media, is moving to Web3.
The acquisition will allow Animoca Brands to further solidify user engagement in motorsports through the existing game, MotoGP™ Championship Quest. It will also enable Animoca Brands to create new gaming experiences for motorsports enthusiasts around the world and increase the brand’s exposure to the growing esports market.
WePlay Media was founded by Graeme Warring and racing video game veteran Mark DeSimone in 2014. After the Animoca Brands’ acquisition, Warring will continue to lead WePlay Media and drive MotoGP-related projects by working with Animoca Brands’ REVV Motorsport team (blockchain motorsport ecosystem), which operates the blockchain game MotoGP™ Ignition.
Animoca Brands first partnered with MotoGP™ in 2019 after releasing motorsport-themed NFTs. Both companies co-produced MotoGP™Ignition. In June, the blockchain giant announced taking top billing at Aragon and Australia in 2022 and two more MotoGP events next season.
“The acquisition of WePlay Media will boost our engagement with fans of the amazing sport of MotoGP, unlocking powerful exposure in both the metaverse and traditional gaming. We are gaining a unique platform to implement our Web3 strategy as we incorporate our motorsport-based REVV Token and NFT programs with the official MotoGP mobile game and deepen our strategic relationship with MotoGP,”
said Yat Siu, the CEO of Animoca Brands.
Animoca Brands also partnered with the NFT platform MADWorld, and MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo to launch an NFT collection, “X-Fuera,” dedicated to a play-to-earn racing game.
