Andrew Ng and Yann LeCun oppose call for pause on powerful AI systems
In Brief
Two prominent figures in the AI industry, Yann LeCun and Andrew Ng, argued against a proposed pause on the development of powerful AI systems.
The 6 month AI pause was hosted on YouTube and drew thousands of viewers. LeCun and Ng challenged an open letter signed by hundreds of AI experts calling for a moratorium of at least six months on training AI systems more advanced than GPT4.
The San Francisco DePAO and Yann-François Ng discussed a six-month moratorium on AI6-month moratorium proposal. They felt it was important enough to speak about today. In San Francisco on July 12, top executives will discuss how they have invested in and optimized AI for success.
Ng first explained that the field of artificial intelligence had seen remarkable advances in recent decades, especially in the last few years. Deep learning techniques enabled the creation of generative AI systems that can produce realistic texts, images and sounds, such as ChatGPT, LLaMa, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and DallE. These systems raised hopes for new applications and possibilities, but also concerns about their potential harms and risks. Some of these concerns were related to the present and near future, such as fairness, bias and social economic displacement. Others were more speculative and distant, such as the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI ) and its possible malicious or unintended consequences.
Society and people’s well-being progress with intelligence. Intelligence is what fuels progress. Yann LeCun, co-founder of Google X, said that some of the signatories to the AI letter are worried about AGI becoming unstable and then eliminating humanity.
Tony Robbins argues that there is potential for harm with advanced AI systems. He believes there are new ideas that will make advanced AI systems more controllable.
The debate over regulating LLMs that produce realistic texts on almost any topic increased three weeks ago after OpenAI released GPT4, a powerful model that is considered to be dangerous because it can be misused. The researchers said a pause on developing or deploying these models was unrealistic and counterproductive. They also called for more collaboration and transparency among researchers, governments and corporations to ensure the ethical and responsible use of these models.
LeCun said his first reaction to the proposal to delay research and development is that it sounds like a new wave of obscurantism. He said the argument against regulation of products is that it doesn’t serve any purpose other than reducing the knowledge that we could use to make technology better, safer.
The benefits of deep learning are creating tremendous value, and pausing that progress could harm those benefits.
- According to a CNBC report, Google is working on AI projects under its Atlas cloud unit, codering responses to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. One of the companies’ products is called Apprentice Bard, a chatbot based on LaMDA technology.
- In 2023, Microsoft and Google will battle it out over AI, with Microsoft investing in Bing and OpenAI to develop chatbots. Google is still the leader in web search, but many users dislike the large number of advertisements and the abundance of spam links.
