Sam Altman’s Worldcoin to Migrate from Polygon to Optimism Ahead of Mainnet Launch
In Brief
The Worldcoin Foundation and Tools for Humanity will be migrating their ecosystem and protocol to the Optimism mainnet.
World ID and World App will be available on the OP mainnet.
The move is part of an effort to bring Optimism’s Superchain vision to life.
The Worldcoin Foundation and its advisor, Tools for Humanity (TFH), have announced that they are migrating their ecosystem and protocol from Polygon to the Optimism mainnet.
Worldcoin’s decentralized identity protocol, World ID, will be the first product to be available on the Optimism mainnet, followed by TFH’s World App, a crypto wallet that enables transactions using Worldcoin, digital assets, and traditional currencies.
The Worldcoin Foundation claims that the World App boasts more than 1.6 million sign-ups in beta and over 500,000 monthly active users and that deployments on the OP mainnet will expand access to more users.
The move comes as part of Worldcoin’s effort in bringing Optimism’s Superchain vision to life. Coined by Optimism, Superchain refers to a unified network of chains as well as a platform for chains. The goal is to combine different layer-2s that are currently separate and make them work together as one system that can share information and be easily modified.
By bringing World ID to the OP mainnet, the Worldcoin Foundation is taking the first step into building inclusive and open identity and governance on the Superchain.
“It has the potential to enhance the capabilities of the Citizens’ House governance, a key component of Optimism’s ecosystem, as well as their AttestationStation, an experiment in emergent identity use cases,” the Worldcoin Foundation wrote in a blog post.
Worldcoin’s history with the Optimism ecosystem goes back to December 2020 when it launched the beta version of World App using Hubble, an optimistic rollup specifically optimized for simple payments, originally started by the PSE team at the Ethereum Foundation. As user demands for features beyond just simple payments outgrew Hubble’s capabilities, World App was moved to Polygon as Optimism and Arbitrum were too costly at the time.
Almost a year ago, Worldcoin and Optimism jointly contributed to EIP4844. Worldcoin Foundation claims that EIP4844 will reduce layer-2 fees by 10 times. Other contributors to EIP4844 include Coinbase via its layer-2 network, Base, which is built on OP’s open-source OP Stack.
Co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Worldcoin’s initial launch drew criticism for its Orb, an open iris imaging device developed by TFH. Its purpose was to supposedly create a database of iris scans that represent “proof of personhood.” However, that would subject users to data gathering and privacy risks that Worldcoin has yet to address.
In March, Worldcoin unveiled its new decentralized identity protocol, World ID, and the SDK that will allow developers to integrate the protocol into their platforms. Worldcoin said World ID is “not derived from or tied to its holder’s biometrics, phone number, crypto wallet or any other identifier.”
