Senegalese transdisciplinary artist Linda Dounia Rebeiz. She investigates painful memories, imagines alternative worlds, and examines and recovers from the effects of power systems via her artistic activity. Her creative approach draws attention to the ways in which black women’s identities, bodies, and relationships to freedom are shaped by the power systems that impact them. The artist works in a variety of media, such as digital and visual art, poetry, and experimental music creation. She is also one of the 20 board members of Artano, a newly established platform for cryptocurrency art.
Generative adversarial networks (GANs), neural-net designs that enable Rebeiz to carefully train AI on her own datasets, are mostly used in her artistic creations. Rebeiz has photographed hundreds of photos of Senegalese flowers and old structures, scanned a large number of photos from national archives that had not yet been posted online, and created public datasets that anybody may use and expand upon. She has produced a number of visually arresting artworks using these new yet historical datasets, such as Once Upon a Flower, which imagines how people could interpret flowery imagery after real flowers have become extinct due to global warming.
