NHS Invests £21 Million in AI for Enhanced Patient Care

In Brief

NHS Trusts gain access to advanced AI imaging and decision support tools through the £21 million AI Diagnostic Fund.

The goal is to expedite diagnoses of cancers, strokes, and heart conditions, ushering in efficient and effective patient care. Positive impact of AI integration includes faster stroke diagnosis, halving treatment time, and tripling chances of independent living post-stroke.

The NHS, UK government-funded medical and health care services, embraces AI to enhance patient care. With a £21 million fund, NHS staff will gain access to state-of-the-art AI technology for quicker diagnosis and treatment.

NHS Trusts (organizational units within the National Health Services of England and Wales) can access the AI Diagnostic Fund to speed up the use of advanced AI imaging and decision support tools. The goal is to accelerate the diagnosis of health issues like cancers, strokes, and heart conditions, ushering in a new era of efficient and effective patient care.

The Health and Social Care Secretary aims to expand AI stroke-diagnosis technology to cover 100% of stroke networks by the end of 2023, benefiting more patients with quicker treatment.

“Artificial intelligence is already transforming the way we deliver healthcare and AI tools are already making a significant impact across the NHS in diagnosing conditions earlier, meaning people can be treated more quickly,”

said Steve Barclay, Health and Social Care Secretary.

The AI Diagnostic Fund will use AI tools to analyze chest X-rays, the primary method for diagnosing lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in the UK. With more than 600,000 chest X-rays performed monthly in England, expanding AI diagnostic tools to more NHS Trusts will aid clinicians in earlier cancer detection, improving patient outcomes.

According to the press release, AI integration in the NHS has already shown positive results. In some cases, AI has halved the time for stroke victims to receive treatment by facilitating faster stroke diagnosis. It has proven to triple the chances of patients living independently after a stroke as timely response is critical when dealing with stroke patients.

The UK government has invested £123 million in 86 AI technologies to benefit patients. These technologies support stroke diagnosis, screening, cardiovascular monitoring, and home-based condition management.

The newly introduced AI & Digital Regulation Service assist NHS staff in safely deploying AI devices. This service simplifies the understanding of NHS regulations concerning AI for developers and adopters, streamlining the process of bringing AI products to market and saving time.

The NHS spends £10 billion per year on medical technology, with the global market projected to reach £150 billion next year. Technological breakthroughs enable the prevention of illnesses, early diagnosis, more effective treatments, and faster recovery, significantly enhancing patient outcomes.
