Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of Google DeepMind and the CEO of Inflection AI, has proposed that the United States impose restrictions on the sale of Nvidia’s AI chips.

Suleyman calls for responsible AI usage and suggests that the chips should only be made available to purchasers who agree to ethically harness the power of AI technology.

He further emphasizes the need for the United States to establish and enforce global standards governing the ethical deployment of AI.

On a side note, the U.S. has recently expanded its restrictions on the export of advanced artificial intelligence chips, extending beyond China to encompass other regions, including select countries in the Middle East.

Mustafa Suleyman also recommends that companies align themselves with the ethical commitments already made by leading AI firms to the White House.

In July this year, major AI companies, including OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms, made voluntary commitments to enhance the safety and responsible usage of AI technology. This involves implementing measures such as watermarking AI-generated content.

Generally speaking, executives and experts in the industry are increasingly advocating for collaboration between AI developers and policymakers to establish comprehensive governance and regulatory frameworks. The emphasis on ethical considerations and responsible AI use continues to grow as AI technology becomes more powerful and more integrated into various aspects of society.

Earlier this month, NVIDIA and Google Cloud announced their partnership expansion to advance AI computing, software, and services. During Google Cloud Next, Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, and Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, discussed Google’s utilization of NVIDIA H100 and A100 GPUs for internal research and inference in divisions such as DeepMind.

On a side note, in June this year, Nvidia and Microsoft backed the round of Suleyman’s Inflection AI, which raised a total of $1.3 billion in funding.

The studio has developed a “personal chatbot” named Pi, which utilizes generative AI technology to engage users in conversations, enabling them to ask questions and share their interests. Notably, Pi is free to use on the web and is available to download on the iPhone and iPad.
