Cozomo de Medici Donates 22 NFT Artworks to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
In Brief
Anonymous NFT art collector Cozomo de Medici donated 22 NFT artworks to LACMA.
Among the artists are Larva Labs’ Matt Hall and John Watkinson, World of Women’s Yam Karkai, and other noted NFT creators.
Anonymous NFT art collector Cozomo de Medici donated 22 NFT artworks to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The donation includes works created from 2017 to 2022. The biggest digital art collection to enter LACMA features mixed media artworks: video, generative, sculpture, photography, 3D, AI, and even a book.
“My hope is that this donation helps forever cement the on-chain art movement in the canon of art history,”
said Cozomo de Medici in a tweet.
Thirteen artists, selected by Cozomo de Medici, are well-known in the NFT space: the list includes Pindar Van Arman, Justin Aversano, Dmitri Cherniak, Matt DesLauriers, Mark Graeffe, Cai Guo-Qiang, Han, Kelian Maissen and Johannes Gees, Monica Rizzolli, Claire Silver, Neil Strauss, Adam Swaab, World of Women artist Yam Karkai, and Matt Hall and John Watkinson, the creators of CryptoPunks.
LACMA is not new to NFTs, as the museum has previously received NFT artwork donations from artist John Gerrard, collector Tom Sachs, and others. In June 2022, LACMA opened a fund that supports women in digital art. The initiative is backed by DJ and entrepreneur Paris Hilton, who is active in the web3 space.
The role of museums in collecting and exhibiting NFT art is still being debated. Some traditional institutions, such as the MoMA in New York, have acquired NFT artworks for their permanent collections. Traditional auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s also recognize the importance of NFTs in the art world, having auctioned digital art. Christie’s even launched an on-chain web3-focused platform, Christie’s 3.0, in September 2022.
