Baidu, the Chinese AI industry leader, showcased its latest developments at the Wave Summit 2023 in Beijing. The star of the show was ERNIE Bot, Baidu’s generative AI conversation bot, whose rapid growth has positioned it as a serious contender in the global race for AI dominance.
Just a few months ago, ERNIE Bot trailed behind the world leader, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. However, the recent advancements have propelled ERNIE Bot to the forefront, challenging not only ChatGPT but also its rivals Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic.
The progress made by ERNIE Bot over the past four months is nothing short of astonishing. Learning performance has tripled, while inference performance has increased by more than 30 times. Moreover, the chain of thought has extended by 2.1 times, enabling deeper reasoning, and the overall knowledge volume has grown by 8.3 times, enhancing ERNIE Bot’s understanding capabilities.
ERNIE Bot is now not only capable of writing texts at a human level but can also do so in any combination of 200 Chinese literary genres. These genres range from classical Chinese literature, such as Biji, to Zhiguai xiaoshuo, a genre that predates The X-Files television series by over two thousand years.
To put China’s AI scale into perspective, Baidu’s deep learning platform, PaddlePaddle, boasts an impressive user base of 8 million developers. It serves over 220,000 enterprises and encompasses more than 800,000 models.
During the presentation at the Wave Summit 2023, Baidu’s CTO, Haifeng Wang, emphasized that AI’s core abilities, including understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory, are bringing humanity closer to the elusive concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Wang expressed his belief that AGI is approaching rapidly, heralding a new era of technological advancement.
This remarkable surge of progress has led experts to marvel at the singularity occurring in Beijing. The growth of China’s intellectual power in the field of AI has become truly singular, defying quantitative predictions and leaving the world in awe.
