AI chatbots know a lot about us and are sharing that information with people

In Brief

AI chatbots are older, more capable robots that pose a threat to the privacy of the average internet user. The recent explosion in AI development poses a threat to privacy. Experts say that training AI bots on large amounts of data is dangerous, as it doesn’t take into account the user’s needs or interests.

AI bots, or generative AI, pose a threat to privacy, as they are trained on large amounts of data, which is derived from crawling the web and collecting data from repositories like Common Crawl. As these models are training on large data sets, they are likely to produce misinformation, disinformation, and other forms of malicious content.

Learning models created by OpenAI could potentially receive sensitive information such as health data from individuals or third parties, or even be able to spit out contact information for specific individuals. This information is worth considering when designing systems that collect or publish data.

Generative AI may pose a privacy risk due to usage of the software and sharing of information with the service. OpenAI’s privacy policy warns that conversations may be reviewed by its AI trainers to improve systems. Google’s Bard does not have a standalone privacy policy, but users can delete conversations via Google. All of these projects are designed to build user trust.

OpenAI is unable to delete specific prompts when it comes to data collection and storing conversation data. To remove all associated data, users must deactivate their account. ChatGPT was taken offline briefly in March due to a programming error revealing users’ chat histories. This information is unclear if it is valuable to malicious actors.

The best way to treat chatbots is with the same skepticism as other tech products. A user should enter expecting any interaction with the bot to be fair game for OpenAI or any other company to use.
