Adidas Originals launches an interoperable Virtual Gear NFT collection
The phygital garment can be used for avatars and PFPs
Holders of Adidas’s Capsule NFTs can burn them in order to receive the Virtual Gear NFTs
Sportswear giant Adidas launches its first wearable NFT collection released under Adidas Originals, the brand’s line dedicated to lifestyle and heritage products. Dubbed Virtual Gear, the NFTs will make part of a new line of interoperable products.
To start, Adidas has released 16 phygital items that incorporate past and future. Notably, the new designs can be used for both virtual avatars and profile pictures. Holders can use their wearables in different metaverses and identity-based projects, existing and upcoming.
In addition to the main line, Adidas has released three limited-edition wearables created in collaboration with crypto influencer Gmoney, the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, and Punks Comics. It’s worth noting that holders of BAYC, MAYC, and Inhabitants NFTs will soon have the possibility to “dress” their avatars using Adidas’s upcoming PFP Tool.
Adidas Originals: Capsule and Phase 2 Capsule NFT holders have already received Virtual Gear NFTs and can now burn their capsules to mint the wearables. Individuals that do not hold tokens from Adidas’s previous drops can purchase Virtual Gear on NFT marketplaces.
“As a brand, adidas has always been about exploring the edges of creativity and pushing the boundaries to find what’s beyond. But Web3 offers our designers and collaborators a new outlet to imagine, and reimagine, how our brand can be represented in augmented and virtual worlds. Creatively, we’re extremely proud to say that this virtual collection represents more than just a historic first for adidas. It also represents an idea of wearable clothing that can transcend time and space, a community that is vividly diverse, and a level of utility that can be explored and even discovered as worlds and avatars take new forms,”
says the Senior VP of Creative Direction for adidas Originals, Nic Galway.
Adidas aims to strengthen its metaverse strategy following its competitor Nike, which has recently introduced a Web3 platform for co-creation. .SWOOSH will let community members co-create phygital garment designs, attend community events, and buy, sell, and trade exclusive designs.
