Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist, Meta

He is well known for his work on optical character recognition and computer vision using convolutional neural networks (CNN), and is a founding father of convolutional nets. He is also one of the main creators of the DjVu image compression technology (together with Léon Bottou and Patrick Haffner). He co-developed the Lush programming language with Léon Bottou. LeCun received the 2018 Turing Award (often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Computing"), together with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, for their work on deep learning.

Yann joined Facebook in December 2013 and currently serves as Chief AI Scientist at Facebook AI Research (FAIR). In addition, he works part-time as a Silver Professor at New York University, where he is mostly connected to the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the NYU Center for Data Science.

In 1987, he graduated with a PhD in computer science from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris) and an EE diploma from Ecole Supérieure d’Ingénieurs en Electrotechnique et Electronique (ESIEE Paris). In 1988, following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto, he began working at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ. After serving for a short time as a Fellow of the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, he was appointed director of the Image Processing Research Department at AT&T Labs-Research in 1996. In 2003, he became a professor at NYU. He served as the NYU Center for Data Science’s inaugural director from 2012 to 2014. Yann and Yoshua Bengio co-direct the CIFAR program on neural computation and adaptive perception.

In addition to being a fellow of AAAI, a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and the recipient of honorary doctorates from IPN, Mexico, and EPFL, he is also a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, the University of Pennsylvania Pender Award, the IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award (2014), the IEEE Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence Distinguished Researcher Award (2015), and the Lovie Award for Lifetime Achievement (2016).
