Demis Hassabis is a British computer scientist, entrepreneur, and researcher in artificial intelligence (CBE FRS FREng FRSA). “AI has the potential to be one of the most important and beneficial technologies ever invented.”

2023

The declaration “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war” was signed by Hassabis in 2023. However, he believes that a global halt to AI advancement would be extremely difficult to implement and that the technology’s potential advantages (such as its ability to improve health and combat climate change) outweigh the risks. According to him, research on assessment tests that gauge the capability and controllability of novel artificial intelligence models is desperately needed.
