Healthcare Meets Finance: How Chinese Firms are Boosting Digital Yuan Adoption
In Brief
Chinese healthcare and energy sector providers will launch a digital yuan payment system.
The Chinese central bank digital currency (CBDC) is set to be used for patient and customer payments in new developments for the nation’s central bank.
According to the Chinese media outlet WXRB, both outpatients and hospitalized mental healthcare patients can now use the CBDC to pay for medical treatment. According to WXRB, people can use the central bank’s digital yuan app to pay deposits, medication, and hospitalization fees.
Hospital staff claims digital yuan payments are a safer and more convenient way to pay for goods and services than cash payments. Digital yuan payments are also very fast.
“Although the CBDC helped mental care facilities improve the medical experience for patients,” they said. Hospitals would be permitted to pursue medical reform and digitization, according to employees.
The Jiangsu Province government organs used the CBDC to settle their most recent electricity bill for municipal street lamps, while the provincial government used the state-owned CBDC to settle its most recent electricity bill for municipal water and wastewater facilities.
Energy firms
The State Grid Corporation of China is the national branch of the energy provider. Over 46 million people use the service. Although the digital currency has found various uses in retail payments and business payments, intergovernmental payments have remained uncharted waters.
Xinhua reported that the payment was a “national first” for public institutions. On Thursday, the China Securities Regulatory Commission allowed the use of CBDCs in securities markets. Chinese investors will soon be able to pay for wealth products using tokens created using Ethereum.
