Google CEO announces plans to integrate AI chat in search engine

Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced the company’s plan to incorporate generative AI into its primary search engine. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the CEO stated that Google aims to improve its ability to handle various search queries and address business challenges.

The California-based big tech is a pioneer in creating large language models (LLMs) that can understand and answer natural-language queries in a human-like manner. However, the company has yet to implement this technology in the search engine.

“Will people be able to ask questions to Google and engage with LLMs in the context of search? Absolutely,”

Pichai told WSJ.

Microsoft has already integrated ChatGPT into its Bing search engine, posing a significant threat to Google’s core business. According to WSJ, the company is also under pressure from investors to reduce costs, which includes Google’s parent company, Alphabet’s, decision to lay off 6% of its workforce in January.

Despite cost-cutting measures, Google has continued to prioritize its AI initiatives and has increased its efforts to develop new products after the success of ChatGPT. While Google has been using AI to understand complex queries for years, the public release of ChatGPT has sparked a competition to integrate the technology into consumer products, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella directly targeting Google’s search engine as a rival.

Pichai also hinted at plans to enable direct interaction between users and the company’s large language models through its search engine, which could disrupt the traditional link-based search experience that has been used for over 20 years. As part of this effort, Google is currently testing several new search products, including versions that allow users to ask follow-up questions to their original queries.

In March, Google made its AI-based chatbot, Bard, publicly available, but rather than integrating it into Google’s search engine, it was offered on a waitlist at a separate site. A month earlier, during its demo presentation, Bard committed factual errors that exposed the shortcomings of Google’s chatbot and caused the company to lose $100 billion in market value.
