OKX Europe Opens Licensed USDT Deposit And Conversion Path To USDC

In Brief

OKX Europe opens USDT deposits with one-way USDC conversion, letting MiCA-affected holders migrate funds on their own terms.

OKX Europe Opens Licensed USDT Deposit And Conversion Path To USDC

OKX Europe has introduced a deposit and conversion mechanism for Tether’s USDT, enabling holders within the European Economic Area to transfer the non-compliant stablecoin onto its licensed platform and convert it to USD Coin. The feature is structured as a one-way flow, meaning users may deposit USDT and exchange it for USDC at their own discretion rather than facing automatic conversion or outright blocking of funds.

The regulatory landscape shifted decisively on July 1, 2026, when the final transition period for crypto-asset service providers expired across the bloc and the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation entered full enforcement. Under MiCA, stablecoins pegged to official currencies must be issued by an authorized electronic money institution, maintain one-to-one reserves in segregated accounts, and grant holders redemption rights at par.

Tether elected not to pursue MiCA authorization, citing concerns over reserve-composition and bank-deposit requirements, which led major platforms including Coinbase Europe, Crypto.com, and Binance’s EEA entity to delist or restrict USDT throughout 2024 and 2025. Circle, by contrast, secured an Electronic Money Institution license in France, enabling USDC and its euro-denominated counterpart EURC to operate as compliant electronic money tokens across all twenty-seven member states.

Conversion Options for Holders Facing Platform Restrictions

For USDT holders in Europe, the practical effect has been a narrowing of options. Most regulated exchanges have either frozen USDT deposits or scheduled automatic balance conversions, leaving customers with limited control over timing or execution. OKX Europe’s new flow differs by preserving user agency: deposits are accepted directly into the licensed venue and conversion to USDC can be executed in a few clicks. USDC currently functions as the most liquid MiCA-authorized stablecoin across European order books, which means converted funds are immediately available for trading or withdrawal into euros.

“Most USDT holders in Europe are getting squeezed in two ways: platforms blocking the deposit outright, or converting it on their own clock,” said Erald Ghoos, CEO of OKX Europe in a written statement. “We are offering a way to convert on your terms, and stay in crypto while you do it,” he added.

The development underscores a broader recalibration of the European stablecoin market. USDT remains the largest stablecoin globally by market capitalization, but its absence from regulated EU venues has consolidated demand around compliant alternatives. By offering a licensed on-ramp for stranded USDT rather than rejecting it entirely, OKX Europe is positioning itself at the intersection of regulatory compliance and user flexibility.
