Entrepreneur Elon Musk’s brain chip startup Neuralink has raised $280 million in a Series D round led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.
Neuralink did not reveal the current valuation of the company. However, in June this year, the startup was reportedly valued at approximately $5 billion.
Founders Fund has previously invested in Musk’s spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX and infrastructure and tunnel construction services organization, The Boring Company. Apart from that, the Venture Fund’s portfolio features Palantir, Paxos, Stripe, Facebook, Airbnb, Spotify, and other noted startups. The company focuses on “finding ways to support technological development,” as “technology is the fundamental driver of growth in the industrialized world,” according to its Manifesto.
Fremont-based Neuralink was co-founded in June 2016 by Elon Musk and a team of seven engineers and scientists. The company develops brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that can be implanted in order to enable direct brain-to-computer communication. As stated on Neuralink’s official website, it aims to create “a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow.”
In May of this year, Neuralink received FDA approval for human trials in the United States.
“Excited to support Neuralink’s next chapter of helping human patients in need. The team has been working for seven years to make this possible, pulling off technical breakthroughs that feel like science fiction. The chance to work with world-class teams accelerating a positive future is why I’m an investor, and even in that category Neuralink is special,” wrote Founders Fund partner Scott Nolan on his X profile.
On a side note, Neuralink is looking for professionals who wish to work on engineering challenges to restore vision and mobility. Individuals with technical, operations, and safety backgrounds can apply on the company’s website.
