Worldcoin Enhances State Bridge for EVM Compatibility and World ID Integration

In Brief

Worldcoin announced a significant update to their state bridge architecture, improving gas efficiency and EVM compatibility.

The World ID facilitates privacy-preserving identity verification, and developers can now bridge it to EVM-compatible chains with various tools.

Worldcoin Enhances State Bridge for EVM Compatibility and Proof of Personhood

Worldcoin has announced a significant update to its state bridge architecture, making the project more gas-efficient and allowing for easier integration with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible chains. The development aims to broaden the scope of applications utilizing a sybil-resistant, proof-of-personhood mechanism.

To enhance interoperability between blockchains, Worldcoin has revamped its state bridge architecture to enable seamless data exchange between the World ID contracts and other EVM-compatible chains. World ID, represented as a Merkle tree on Ethereum, facilitates privacy-preserving identity verification across various applications.

Previously, the state bridge architecture was closely tied to the WorldId Identity Manager, which had limitations such as requiring permission access and being gas-inefficient. The updated architecture now allows for permissionless state bridge propagation and the creation of individual state bridges for chains not natively supported by Worldcoin.

Developers can leverage this new architecture to bridge World ID to EVM-compatible chains using mechanisms like Optimism’s CrossDomainMessenger and Scroll’s ScrollMessenger. To achieve this, the target chain must be EVM compatible with support for Pairing (ECC) and keccak256 EVM precompiles.

Worldcoin contributors are also working on a suite of tools, including a ‘state-bridge-service’ and ‘tree-availability-service,’ to facilitate bridging roots and building inclusion proofs for various EVM-compatible chains, with plans to open-source these tools in the coming weeks.

According to the blog post, the safety and quality of the protocol-related upgrades remain a top priority for the TFH contributor team. Audits from the Least Authority and the Nethermind ensure the soundness of the blockchain technologies, cryptography, and smart contracts involved in the state bridge architecture.

Last month, the French data watchdog CNIL conducted office inspections at Worldcoin in Paris, adding pressure on the company. The action followed a decline in global interest and Worldcoin’s falling prices. CNIL had initiated a probe in July, questioning the legality of Worldcoin’s biometric data collection, which includes iris scans for digital IDs and free cryptocurrency. The Worldcoin Foundation in the Cayman Islands welcomed the regulatory attention, though specific inspection details remain undisclosed.
