Tokyo to Host EDCON 2024: A Week-Long Celebration of Blockchain Innovation and Culture

This summer, Tokyo will be the epicenter of blockchain innovation as it hosts EDCON 2024 on July 24-30. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Ethereum Development Conference offers professionals and tech lovers from various technological fields a week filled with thoughtful conversations and creative and cultural interactions.

Being present in four different countries, EDCON has made a name for itself as the leading blockchain event. It has hosted over 10,000 developers, received assistance from more than 400 sponsors, and featured more than 300 speakers in the last eight years. Over 5 million people have seen the conference’s recordings, and 20,000 participants have joined the EDCON family. With more than 450 projects this year, EDCON will highlight its important place in the blockchain and crypto ecosystem.

Eight Years of Ethereum’s Growth and Innovation

The Ethereum Development Conference (EDCON) immediately became an important event for the blockchain community after its first event in 2017. EDCON 2017 in Paris primarily focused on Ethereum’s technology, Proof of Stake, scalability, and consortium chains. It was just the beginning stage for future developments.

Expanding on these themes, EDCON 2018 in Toronto showcased blockchain projects and community-building initiatives in addition to establishing the Super Demo competition. Events like the one held in Sydney in 2019 kept on innovating through a week-long series that included a major conference and hackathon covering subjects like Plasma and Sharding.

With virtual editions in 2020 and 2021, EDCON adjusted to the changing global environment while retaining its influence and covering Ethereum’s technology advancements, governance, and uses in decentralized finance.

The 2022 edition brought blockchain technology back to live events in San Francisco, where Ethereum’s key developers conducted debates on future paths and the wider usage of blockchain. Ethereum specialists continued to collaborate at EDCON 2023 in Podgorica.

Why Tokyo?

Tokyo has been selected to host EDCON 2024 for a number of convincing reasons that highlight the city’s value as a worldwide center for blockchain innovation and cross-cultural interaction. For example, the new Limited Partnership Act for Investments in Japan seeks to create an atmosphere that is favorable to Web3 businesses. This is why Tokyo is a great place for an EDCON event because of the supportive and transparent regulations that are a major draw for both domestic and foreign actors.

Tokyo’s reputation as a hub for technology perfectly complements EDCON’s objectives to promote open-source cooperation and blockchain ecosystem interoperability. This integration is improved even further when the Shibuya Municipal Government has partnered with EDCON hosts.

Tokyo has a dynamic cultural backdrop that enhances the EDCON experience. Participants may interact with Japanese culture and blockchain in a unique setting thanks to the city’s well-known monuments and vibrant metropolitan atmosphere. In Tokyo, EDCON’s inventive energy may combine with Japan’s rich legacy to produce something radically new for the sector.

Star-Studded Speaker Lineup

Almost all of the experts that you already know about the blockchain ecosystem are expected to speak at the conference. The event’s main speakers, co-founders of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin and Joe Lubin, will share with the guests their expertise and over a decade of experience in this field. A diverse mix of speakers from many industries will join them:

  • Prominent members of the Ethereum Foundation, including Toni Wahrstätter, Hsiao-Wei Wang, and Tim Beiko, will discuss the technical details of Ethereum’s evolution.
  • Entrepreneurs like Kevin Owocki, the creator of Gitcoin, and Austin Griffith, the founder of Build Guild, will discuss their experiences in building on Ethereum.
  • Cultural icons like football player Keisuke Honda and Grammy Award-winning musician RAC will help close the acceptance gap between Web3 technologies and the general public.
  • Prominent figures in the industry, such as Safe co-founder Richard Meissner and StarkWare co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson, will provide perspectives on real-world uses for blockchain technology.

The Venue Does Matter

EDCON 2024 will unfold across multiple prestigious venues, each adding its unique touch to the event:

The United Nations University

July 24-28, 2024

The first several days of the conference, with the Ethereum Quorum and community workshops, will take place in the center of Shibuya – the center of innovation that holds diplomatic standing.

The Yoyogi National Gymnasium

July 29-30, 2024

The conference’s final days will take place on the main stage of a beautiful arena that has held two Olympic Games. This is the first time such a large-scale tech event has been conducted at this location, which can be considered a sign of the general public’s acceptance of blockchain.

Prepare for a Week of Immersive Experiences

The conference agenda is packed with diverse offerings for blockchain enthusiasts of various levels and skills:

Community Events (July 24-28): A series of workshops, meetups, and networking sessions spread across Tokyo.

Super Demo Day + Community Workshops (July 24-28): Held at the United Nations University. Filled with hands-on experiences and showcases of new technological projects.

Main Events (July 29-30): The main conference days at Yoyogi National Gymnasium. We’re expecting keynote speeches, panel discussions, and major announcements on the blockchain sector.

But that’s not the whole agenda!

EDCON 2024 sets itself apart with a number of creative projects. Unified Hacker Houses are cooperative centers devoted to self-sufficient world-building, zero-knowledge applications, and the fusion of public goods and creativity.

The Cultural Showcase illustrates how blockchain technology is integrating with the creative industry by showcasing international artists with iconic Japanese figures. Furthermore, the upcoming Nouns DAO Activation is carried out through a wide range of activities, from well-known billboards in Shibuya to a focused presence at the United Nations University, highlighting its extensive influence throughout the event week.

Unprecedented Move to Promote Web3 – Free Admission to the Event

In an effort to foster diversity and community development within the blockchain industry, EDCON 2024 is providing free entrance.

The onboarding of new users into the blockchain community is facilitated by the free entrance policy as well. Web2 enterprises will be introduced to Web3 technology through a series of seminars and events, including presentations from Toyota, Tokyu, Seibu, SMBC (Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation), Aioi (Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance), and other organizations.

This inclusive approach integrates a greater range of viewpoints and experiences, expanding the reach of blockchain education and strengthening the community.
