The author of a new kids’ book, “Alice and Sparkle,” gets death threats for using AI

In Brief

Author of Alice and Sparkle draws fire for using AI in children’s book

Creative professionals were quick to criticize the use of AI to write a children’s book, even going so far as to make death threats. However, the author of the book, Ammaar Reshi, remains unphased. Using the chatbot ChatGPT, he was able to write a story about a woman named Alice and her robot assistant, Sparkle. The story is meant to introduce children to different types of world technologies.

The author requested that the system make the heroine very curious and the assistant self-aware.

Then, he used Midjourney to generate illustrations for a 14-page book. The author stated that they spent hours making correct requests for Midjourney and discarded hundreds of illustrations to get 13 final images. Then, he uploaded the results to Amazon.

At first, the enthusiast planned to make a book only for the child of friends; however, after publishing the news on Instagram, he received many requests to buy it.

Ammaar Reshi’s new book, Alice and Sparkle, has been getting a lot of attention lately. In just one day, he sold over 70 copies and made 45 dollars. When he shared the news on Twitter, sales increased even more.

All was not great, as he also received a lot of criticism from children’s writers and book illustrators. They believe that Ammaar doesn’t deserve to get paid for the book because he “didn’t put a lot of work into it.” They’re all surprised and frightened by the potential of AI, which can do their job in a matter of hours. Ammaar has even received insults and death threats from angry writers.

Ammaar is not planning a second installment of Alice and Sparkle anytime soon. He explained he needs to learn more about AI art before proceeding.
