Alibaba Cloud Joins Sui’s Agent Payments Network, Giving AI Agents Controlled Onchain Access To Cloud Services
In Brief
Sui and Alibaba Cloud partner to let AI agents pay for cloud services with stablecoins via Sui Agent Payments, unveiled at Sui Basecamp 2026.

Sui and Alibaba Cloud have announced a strategic partnership designed to allow artificial intelligence agents to pay for cloud services automatically, without requiring human approval for each transaction. The collaboration was unveiled at Sui Basecamp, the network’s annual conference held in Singapore on October 7, 2026.
Under the agreement, Alibaba Cloud’s services will be integrated into Sui Agent Payments, Sui’s toolkit for AI agent transactions. Once the integration is complete, agents will be able to settle payments for individual service calls using stablecoins. This approach marks a departure from traditional card-based checkouts, which assume that a person confirms every purchase. Instead, spending would occur at machine speed, bounded only by limits defined in advance by the user.
The partnership aligns with Mysten Labs’ broader vision of what it calls the agentic economy. The company, which developed the Sui network, framed this year’s Basecamp event around the idea that economic activity is gradually shifting away from people clicking checkout buttons and toward software agents transacting continuously on their behalf. Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and chief product officer of Mysten Labs, articulated this thesis ahead of the conference, arguing that machine-speed transactions will become a defining feature of digital commerce.
Neither Sui nor Alibaba Cloud has disclosed a launch date, pricing details, or which cloud services will be integrated first. The companies also have not explained how users will instruct their agents beyond setting an overall budget — a notable gap, since a spending cap limits how much an agent can spend but not how it allocates those funds.
Risks and a Competitive Race in Agent Payments
The autonomous payment model carries potential risks that remain unaddressed. An agent caught in a loop could repeatedly send the same paid request, with each call settling automatically and draining the allocated budget before any human intervention. Neither firm has indicated whether the system will include rate limits, spending alerts, or other safeguards against such failures.
The deal also enters an increasingly crowded field. In September, Cardano joined the x402 standard, a protocol that enables AI agents to pay for online services using ADA. Meanwhile, institutional interest in machine-native payments continues to grow: a research paper from BlackRock identified stablecoins as the leading candidate to serve as money designed for autonomous machines.
On the market side, SUI has appreciated approximately 43% over the past month, according to BeInCrypto price data. However, trading volume around the token currently remains low, reflecting a quiet market environment. Analysts suggest the partnership could stimulate user engagement and renewed trading activity, with market participants watching closely for any impact on demand for Sui’s services and the network’s competitive standing.
The broader significance of the agreement extends beyond a single blockchain. If Sui and Alibaba Cloud succeed in scaling per-call stablecoin payments for cloud infrastructure, other cloud providers may come under pressure to adopt similar agent-native billing models, potentially accelerating the emergence of machine-driven commerce across the technology sector.
