Spotify Co-founder Daniel Ek Raises $65M Series A for AI Body Scanning Startup Neko Health
Neko Health, the AI body scanning health tech startup co-founded by Hjalmar Nilsonne and Spotify’s Daniel Ek, has completed a €60 million ($65 million) Series A funding round led by Lakestar, with participation from Atomico and General Catalyst.
According to a press release, this is the first time the startup has brought in external funding. As part of the funding round, Lakestar founder Klaus Hommels and Atomico founder Niklas Zennström will join Neko Health’s board along with its founders.
The new funding will be used for Neko Health’s expansion plans, continued research and development, clinical studies, and talent recruitment.
The company was founded in 2018 by Hjalmar Nilsonne and Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek. Headquartered in Stockholm, Neko Health currently has a team of 35 doctors, researchers, and technicians across Europe, and operates the Atrium Vårdcentral clinic in Kungsholmen.
Neko Health leverages sensor technology and AI to create advanced medical scanning technology, which enables broad and non-invasive collection of health data, offering a quick, convenient, and affordable solution.
“Healthcare costs are spiraling out of control. We believe preventive health will be key to reversing this trend. Doctors today just don’t have enough time or resources to focus on prevention. This leads to many health problems going unnoticed until they get really serious, causing a lot of pain and putting a massive strain on the healthcare system,”
said Hjalmar Nilsonne, CEO and co-founder of Neko Health.
Priced at €250 per slot, the body scan uses over 70 sensors to collect 50 million data points in 10 minutes and can detect skin changes as small as 0.2 millimetres. This technology is meant to help doctors in detecting health conditions earlier, including skin conditions, skin cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other metabolic syndromes and come up with preventative measures for diseases.
After the scan, patients undergo an in-house doctor’s consultation during which they receive their health results and personalized recommendations. The patients will also get access to a summary of their health data in an app where they can follow their health trends.
Neko Health claims that its body scanning slots were sold out in less than two hours when it launched earlier this year, with a rebooking rate of 80% after the initial scan. There are currently 10,000 people on the waitlist. The Neko Body Scan experience is currently only available in Stockholm but will soon launch in clinics across Europe.
