Meta’s App Threads Reaches 100 Million Users – This Is Why
In Brief
Meta’s newly-launched “text-based conversation app” Threads has reached 100 million users in five days.
However, numerous users are reportedly “scam” accounts of businesses and influencers.
Threads users can not delete their accounts unless they delete their Instagram pages too.
Meta’s newly-launched “text-based conversation app” Threads has reached 100 million users. The so-called Twitter rival went live on July 6 (or July 5 in the United States, Canada, and South America.) On the first day, the application attracted 30 million users, according to the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg. Within five days after the launch, 100 million individuals signed up to Threads.
However, out of these millions, numerous users are “scam” accounts of businesses and influencers. “Major accounts are starting to get the duplicate scam accounts on Threads,” writes a user called Jay D. In a Twitter post.
At the same time, several individuals prefer Threads to Twitter: ”Interesting that I am followed by numerous scam and spam accounts every day ever since Elon took over. Haven’t been approached by any scams or spam accounts on Threads,” shared Ray Ceo Jr.
Threads currently features some other significant flaws. For instance, the application does not have the “Following” feed or hashtags, and users can not send direct messages and search for posts.
Privacy is another concern, as Threads collects users’ personal information as well as sensitive data. This includes Health and Fitness information, Purchases, Financial Information, Location, Contacts, User Content, Search History, Identifiers, Usage Data, Sensitive Information, Diagnostics, and more.
It’s also worth noting that once signed up for the application, users can not delete their accounts unless they delete their Instagram pages too. The feature is one of the reasons why Threads continues gaining users – they can not fully deactivate their profiles.
Nevertheless, Meta is reportedly working on new features. The company plans to integrate ActivityPub, a protocol used on decentralized networks, to enable users to interact with other fediverse servers. Among the latter are microblogging platforms Mastodon and Pleroma and the social network Friendica.
