Bing’s AI Can’t Be Trusted; The Search Engine Buries Its Mistakes

In Brief

Microsoft’s smart search engine makes a lot of mistakes but hides them well.

Bing also struggles with local search results.

Users should be aware of its weaknesses before relying on it for important information.

Recently, we discussed how Google lost $100 billion as a result of a poor presentation of its chatbot. Not only was the service presentation mediocre, but Bard also managed to get a fact wrong in the response. We quickly proclaimed Microsoft’s victory in the first round of the chatbot battle.

It turned out that Bing also cannot be trusted, and its chatbot also made a bunch of mistakes in the presentation, less noticeable but no less serious in the everyday sense. Microsoft’s smart search engine makes a lot of mistakes but buries them better than its Google counterpart.

During the demo, Bing described the advantages and disadvantages of the Bissell handheld vacuum cleaner. The chatbot described the device as being loud, low-powered, and having a short wire. It turns out that Bing made all this up. It was later revealed that all of this information was created by Bing.

Despite this, Bing is still used by many people because it generally provides accurate results. However, there are some areas where it falls short. For example, when researching health-related topics, Bing often relies on Wikipedia as its primary source. However, Wikipedia is not always reliable, which can result in Bing providing inaccurate information.

Bing also struggles with local search results. This is because the search engine relies heavily on Bing Maps, which is not always accurate.

Users who were able to test the upgraded Bing report that he also has date confusion, believing that December 2022 would occur after February 2023, and that he is also unaware that Croatia is a member of the EU.

Another task Bing got during the presentation was to plan a five-day trip to Mexico. Everything would be fine, but some of the suggested establishments had been closed for a long time. It also did not mention that one of the recommended places is the oldest gay bar in Mexico; It also indicated incorrect opening hours for another.

Bing couldn’t cope with simple summarizing either. The service was supposed to highlight the main points from the financial statements of Gap and Lululemon, but it either misrepresented or simply invented most of the numbers.

Users who managed to test the updated Bing write that it also gets confused about the dates and claims December 2022 will be after February 2023. It also does not know that Croatia is part of the European Union despite it being a member of the EU since 2013.

Overall, Bing is a decent search engine, but it is not perfect. Users should be aware of its weaknesses before relying on it for important information. We sincerely apologize to Google; so far, you have had a goalless draw with Microsoft.

  • Bing is a brand-new AI-powered browser from Microsoft that uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT algorithm to comprehend the user’s intent and deliver more relevant search results. It comes pre-installed with the Edge browser and is available in 100 different languages. It is more capable than earlier versions, more responsive to inquiries, and able to present more recent data.
  • Microsoft has declared that it will start with the Bing search engine and incorporate artificial intelligence into every one of its products. The Prometheus language model from OpenAI, which is the next generation and more potent than ChatGPT, is what will fuel the brand-new Bing search engine. As a result, results will be more relevant, appropriately annotate snippets, be more current, comprehend geolocation, and be more secure.
