Anthropic releases MCP 2026-07-28, the largest update yet, with a stateless core, standardized extensions, and hardened enterprise authentication.

Anthropic Releases Largest MCP Update Yet, Moving Protocol To Stateless Core For Enterprise Scale

AI safety and research company Anthropic released the fifth specification of its Model Context Protocol, designated MCP 2026-07-28, representing the most substantial revision of the open standard since its introduction. The update arrives as MCP surpasses 400 million monthly SDK downloads—a fourfold increase this year—and solidifies its position as the dominant protocol for connecting AI agents to external applications, tools, and enterprise data sources.

The release fundamentally rearchitects MCP around a stateless core, replacing the previous bidirectional, session-dependent model with a lightweight request/response framework. By eliminating the requirement for servers to maintain persistent session state, the change enables deployment on serverless and edge infrastructure while permitting straightforward horizontal scaling behind standard load balancers. Anthropic stated that this reduction in operational overhead allows developers to manage complexity more efficiently as connector usage expands.

Alongside the architectural shift, the specification introduces a formal, versioned extensions framework that provides standardised pathways to augment the protocol without modifying its core. Three extensions graduate in this release: MCP Apps, which enable servers to render interactive user interfaces within sandboxed iframes directly inside AI conversations; Tasks, which support long-running and asynchronous operations beyond synchronous request boundaries; and Enterprise Managed Auth, which allows organisations to centralise access control through existing identity providers such as Microsoft Entra or Okta. Authorization mechanisms have been hardened to align with production-grade OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect deployments, removing previous enterprise integration workarounds. A formal deprecation policy has also been established.

Enterprise Backing From Zoom, Figma, Intuit, and Netlify Drives Production-Grade Expansion Across Anthropic’s Platform

The update has drawn immediate endorsements from major ecosystem partners, underscoring its enterprise readiness. Zoom highlighted that stateless deployment improves reliability for bringing meeting intelligence into AI workflows, while Figma cited horizontal scalability as critical for growing usage of its design-canvas connector. Intuit noted that the extensions framework supports agentic financial experiences at enterprise scale for its 100 million customers, and Netlify emphasised that treating MCP as a first-class HTTP workload eliminates session-management friction for platform developers.

Within Anthropic’s Claude platform, the protocol now underpins more than 950 listed connectors used by millions daily. Recent product enhancements include inline interactive interfaces via MCP Apps, zero-touch enterprise provisioning through identity-provider group inheritance, an observability dashboard enabling developers to track adoption and diagnose latency, and a research-preview capability called MCP tunnels that connects Claude to private-network servers without public endpoints or inbound firewall rules.

By moving to a stateless foundation, standardising extensibility, and hardening enterprise authentication, MCP 2026-07-28 signals a deliberate maturation of the protocol from an experimental integration layer to production-grade infrastructure intended to anchor the broader agentic AI ecosystem.
