AI Research and Development Flourishes in Leading Tech Companies Like Apple and Amazon

Tech giants Apple, Amazon, and other major players are putting a lot of money into AI research and development. The second half of 2023 looks promising for AI, with exciting advancements on the way.

Apple’s research spending hit $22.61 billion for the year so far, a figure that’s $3.12 billion higher than this time last year. CEO Tim Cook said some of this budget was driven by Apple’s work on generative AI.

In contrast to its main competitors, the tech giant has maintained a notable silence on AI, while others like Meta, Microsoft, and Google engage in a competitive AI race to launch new products. Apple’s progress in AI has been slow, evident from the absence of any mention of generative AI during its WWDC keynote in June.

However, during its latest earnings call, Tim Cook emphasized the critical importance of AI and machine learning, considering them integral to nearly every product. He clarified that Apple has been conducting research across AI technologies, including generative AI, for several years and intends to continue these efforts moving forward.

Meanwhile, Amazon provided updates on its AI initiatives, focusing on AI services and large language models for business clients. The company and its subsidiary, Amazon Web Services (AWS), have made substantial investments in AI, offering services beyond consumer-facing chatbots and image generators.

Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the company’s focus on generative AI and the opportunities it presents. Amazon sees three key areas in the AI space: making high-end AI chips in collaboration with Nvidia, offering large language models as a service through Amazon Bedrock, and developing consumer-facing tools like the AI-powered coding companion, Amazon CodeWhisperer.

Amazon is optimistic that most generative AI applications will be built on its cloud platform, AWS. The platform has extensive storage, database, analytics, and data management services and a vast customer base and data resources.

During their second-quarter earnings calls, Alphabet and Microsoft, the frontrunners in artificial intelligence, showed cautious optimism about their AI expansion plans. Last week, Alphabet reported better-than-expected quarterly results and significant growth in cloud revenue, attributing some success to the productivity promise of AI. However, the company also mentioned rising costs due to AI investments.

On the other hand, Microsoft faced disappointment from some investors and analysts regarding what seemed to be a delayed rollout of its AI products. Microsoft’s CFO, Amy Hood, expressed confidence in the company’s long-term AI capabilities but warned of a greater impact on revenue in the future as they invest in building out their AI infrastructure and meeting demand.
