AI Expands Into Animation and Gaming: OpenAI’s First AI Feature Film Eyes Cannes 2026

In Brief

Set to premiere at Cannes 2026 in May, OpenAI-backed animated film Critterz challenges traditional production models with a $30 million budget.

AI Expands Into Animation and Gaming: OpenAI’s First AI Feature Film Eyes Cannes 2026

OpenAI recently announced its support for an animated feature film, Critterz, produced by UK-based Vertigo Films and the Culver City creative agency Native Foreign. The project is set to become the first feature-length film primarily powered by artificial intelligence technologies, including OpenAI’s image generation model DALL·E and its text-to-video model Sora. The film is expected to premiere globally at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026.

Critterz began as a short film released in 2023 and directed by OpenAI Creative Director Chad Nelson. The short combined AI-generated visuals with traditional animation techniques. It was shortlisted for the Producers Guild Innovation Award and screened at several international film festivals.

AI Technologies Reshapes the Creative Entertainment Industry

The rapid development of artificial intelligence is transforming how content is created and how consumers experience entertainment. Today, AI is widely integrated into streaming platforms, online gaming, social media, and e-commerce services.

In gaming, adaptive AI can adjust difficulty levels and storylines based on player preferences and behavior, creating a more immersive experience. Some open-world games use generative models to design maps and mission content and shorten development cycles.

Meanwhile, digital entertainment platforms continue to introduce virtual concerts, interactive media formats, and other diverse online services.

Machine learning also enables streaming services to analyze viewing patterns in greater detail. Platforms can track how often viewers binge-watch episodes, when users pause or skip scenes, and which devices are used, such as smart TVs, mobile phones, or laptops. This data is then used to enhance personalized content recommendations

Similarly, online gaming platforms use AI to enhance the personalized user experience. For instance, some of the best-rated casino sites in Hong Kong match players with similar skill levels and recommend modes they are likely to enjoy. AI is also used to spot cheating patterns and reduce fraud.

What is Critterz about?

The story of Critterz takes place in a hidden forest where small, colorful creatures live. The film initially adopts the tone of a nature documentary, with a narrator guiding audiences through the mysterious woodland. Later on, the narrative takes a playful turn when the creatures suddenly interrupt the narration and push back against how they are being portrayed on screen. Their peaceful world is further disrupted by the arrival of an unexpected outsider, forcing the Critterz to leave their home and go on an adventure to find a new place to live. The animated comedy is suitable for all ages.

Critterz Marks a New Phase in AI Film Production

According to The Wall Street Journal, Critterz is expected to complete production in just nine months with a budget of less than $30 million. In comparison, traditional Hollywood animated features often require several years to produce and can cost more than $100 million. AI-powered production uses significantly less time and a lower budget.

During early development, generative AI accelerates concept creation and scene design. Official sources state that the Critterz team can generate hundreds of visual drafts per day, which are then refined and finalized by animators and designers.

OpenAI has stated that one of the project’s goals is to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can make film production faster and more efficient. The human-AI collaboration model may reshape cost structures within the film industry, potentially lowering barriers for mid-sized and independent studios.

Some analysts suggest that reducing production costs through AI could increase content release frequency and potentially improve user retention. However, it may also reduce demand for certain traditional roles and prompt shifts within the industry.

Elon Musk has also revealed that xAI has held discussions with the creators of EVE Online regarding AI-powered game development. He stated that AI systems could enable dynamic gameplay features that are difficult to achieve through traditional development processes.

Controversies Surrounding AI in the Creative Industry

As AI becomes more deeply embedded in creative sectors, concerns over misuse and ethics are gaining attention, including delayed disclosure of AI-generated content and copyright disputes involving synthetic voice technologies.

In May 2025, fantasy author Lena McDonald faced backlash after readers discovered visible AI prompts and editing notes inside her novel Darkhollow Academy: Year 2. Screenshots showed attempts to rewrite passages in the style of another writer. In music, the 2025 track “I Run” by Haven was removed from streaming platforms like Spotify after AI-generated vocals were found to impersonate singer Jorja Smith without authorization.

Regulators have responded with new frameworks. The European Union’s AI Act requires AI-generated content to be labeled under specific circumstances. The United States and the United Kingdom have adopted risk-based regulatory approaches to address emerging challenges.

Martin Casado, general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, has argued that future regulation should focus on how AI is used rather than on the models themselves. He advocates for targeted legislation that addresses specific risks instead of broad restrictions that could limit innovation.

As AI continues to expand into film, gaming, and digital media, balancing innovation with the protection of creators’ rights remains a major challenge for the industry.
