1inch has unveiled Aqua, which the decentralized exchange aggregator describes as its most significant product launch to date. Aqua is a shared liquidity layer that allows a single wallet balance to simultaneously back multiple liquidity positions without requiring users to deposit tokens into a protocol-controlled pool. The product is currently live across 13 EVM-compatible chains.
The launch addresses a critical inefficiency in decentralized finance: according to 1inch, approximately 85% of DeFi liquidity is idle or poorly positioned when trades occur, resulting in thin markets and suboptimal pricing despite protocols reporting substantial total value locked. Liquidity providers currently fragment their capital across numerous pools, chains, and trading pairs, a practice that 1inch estimates costs the market up to $150 million in forgone fees annually. Aqua aims to consolidate this fragmented liquidity by enabling the same token balance to service multiple positions, thereby increasing the time assets remain in range and improving earning potential. The development is particularly relevant for institutional investors and traditional finance firms, for whom deeper, more usable onchain liquidity is essential to executing large trades efficiently.
Technical Architecture and Risk Controls
Rather than taking custody of funds, Aqua operates as a registry that maintains virtual balances—internal accounting counters rather than actual deposits. When a provider opens a position, no tokens move; the protocol simply records how much of the provider’s existing token allowance is allocated to that position. When a swap executes, tokens transfer directly from the provider’s wallet to the swapper in a single atomic transaction. If the wallet cannot cover the fill, the transaction reverts entirely, eliminating partial fills and protocol debt. The Aqua contract itself holds no tokens at any time.
This model relies on the Shared Liquidity Ratio (SLR), which allows the same real balance to back several positions simultaneously without creating leverage or debt. Because swap demand is asynchronous, a single balance can service multiple positions’ occasional fills, with each transaction capped by the actual tokens present in the wallet at execution. Pricing and execution are handled by SwapVM, an engine that supports multiple curve types—including constant product, concentrated liquidity, and pegged stablecoin curves—while allowing developers to integrate custom logic.
Security measures emphasize self-custody and bounded exposure. Providers retain control of their assets and may revoke token allowances or close positions at any time. The protocol has undergone audits by OpenZeppelin, Bailsec, Hexens, Nethermind, Theory, and Decurity. At launch, swap execution is restricted to verified 1inch Resolvers that hold a soulbound KycNFT, making Aqua a self-custodial venue with verified counterparties. However, providers still face market risks, including impermanent loss and smart-contract vulnerabilities, and fees are not guaranteed.
